Annual Pride and Pancakes event highlighted by first in-person crowd since 2019

Welcoming an in-person crowd for the first time since 2019, the 29th annual Pride and Pancakes breakfast (formerly known as the LGBTQ+ and Ally Pancake Breakfast) was held at UNH on April 20, honoring the recipients of the 2022 Bill Kidder LGBTQIA+ Awards.

A crowd of more than 150 gathered in the Granite State Room of the MUB, with additional guests viewing via Zoom. Among those in attendance was Paul Tosi, a founder of the UNH Gay Student Organization (GSO), who was visiting from California and received a moment of appreciation.

Among those who spoke at the event were Tarkington Newman, Cece Tarr, Michelle Bronner and Stacey Hall – all from UNH – who addressed the audience on transgender athlete inclusivity in sports.

Work produced by students in the Intro to LGBTQIA+ Studies course in the women and gender studies department was on display throughout the event, as well.

This year’s event began with the presentation of awards. Here is a complete list of this year’s recipients:Next year’s breakfast is already shaping up to be an important one, as well, as it will be both the 30th anniversary of the pancake breakfast and the 50th year since the GSO was founded and won its Supreme Court case in 1973.

2022 Kidder Award Recipients

Kelsey Boucher – Faculty Award

For conscientious efforts to increase internships focused on the LGBTQIA+ experience as well as fostering an academic environment of belonging within the Social Work Department.

Deborah Briand – Staff Award

For championing the Campus Pride Index at UNH and working to ensure the voices of LGBTQIA+ alumni inform current inclusivity efforts.

Emily Whalen – Graduate Student Award

For steadfast leadership of Stonewall Grads as well as consistent facilitation of academic discussions centering inclusion.

Taylor Largmann – Graduate Student Award

For relentless advocacy regarding legal protections for the LGBTQIA+ community within the state of New Hampshire.

Sydney Herzig-Deribin – Undergraduate Student Award

For robust student leadership & mentorship within LGBTQIA+ student organizations as well as the classroom.

Jillian Seale – Undergraduate Student Award

For dedicated service to Alliance, the Beauregard Center and Safe Zones training while navigating the challenges of the pandemic.

Stonewall Grads – Pink Triangle Award

For fostering a community of belonging for LGBTQIA+ Graduate Students and general awareness building on campus.
